Stanley Wing Safari

Stanley Wing Safari
The Best of Kenya & Tanzania

The Stanley Wing, named for the iconic 19th-century Africa explorer Henry Morton Stanley, may be Micato's most comprehensive and popular safari. We range through East Africa widely and leisurely, from Nairobi into the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro in southern Kenya and farther into Tanzania, with luxuriously long stays in some of the continent's most treasured and exhilarating game parks. The Stanley Wing is a matchless introduction to the dreamt-of Africa; it's also a marvelous way to experience that Africa yet again.

Stanley, a world celebrity for finding Dr. David Livingstone in 1871 after a gruesome 700-mile trek from Zanzibar to Lake Tanganyika (he legendarily greeted the famed missionary with the words "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?"), still ignites controversy among historians (they don't call you Bula Matari-Breaker of Rocks- for your mild manners). But a couple of things about him are sure. He was a very tough fellow, and he was hopelessly enthralled by Africa and the "sweet and novel pleasure of indifference to all things earthly" that it offers the traveller, "one of the most soul-lulling pleasures a mortal can enjoy."

Safari Highlights

  • Daily game drives, optional bush walks in the Maasai Mara, and horsebacking along the base of lordly Mount Kenya.
  • The historic Mount Kenya Safari Club: golf on the equator, spa treatments while gazing out at Mount Kenya, bicycling, fishing on the great mountain’s foothill streams.
  • Unique wildlife encounters: at a chimpanzee sanctuary and a heart-tugging visit with orphaned and abandoned wildlife at Mount Kenya Safari Club’s animal orphanage.
  • Visit to AmericaShare’s Harambee Centre in Nairobi, lunch with Felix and Jane Pinto.
  • Service at every step by your Micato Safari Director and 24 x 7 backup from our Concierge Service.

Options & Extensions

Hot Air Balloon Safari
It is an effortless feeling usually reserved for dreams… natural, feather-light, exhilarating. There, looking out over a stunning landscape, from your peerless perch, in the calming silence of the African dawn… it’s hard to imagine it getting any better. And then, the star of the show—quite literally, in fact—pokes out from under its terrestrial cloak.

Tracking Majestic Mountain Gorillas
The soft mists prevail here as they did when Dian Fossey wrote her legendary book Gorillas in the Mist. And the creatures that drew Dr. Fossey are the same ones which beckon to us: rare and endangered Mountain Gorillas.

Cape Town Sojourn
A beautiful mix of natural and man-made pleasures, Cape Town is Africa's treasure for good reason. This perfect post-safari sojourn yields a winning blend of top city sights, sophisticated dining, luscious winelands, and more.

Lend a Helping Hand
Every Micato traveller is given the opportunity to change the course of a life. We invite guests to spend an extra day in Nairobi and visit one of our AmericaShare projects in the slums, learn of the challenges, meet the orphaned and vulnerable children and be inspirited to help.

Zanzibar
Zanzibar. Its perfumed air caresses travellers with scents of the spices that have grown in abundance throughout the island since time began. Exotic and enchanting, this Indian Ocean isle allures travellers with a personality and pace all its own—just a short hop from mainland Tanzania, but a world away.

About Micato Safaris
Back in 1966, Felix Pinto, a ranking member of the ex-British Kenyan government, started a luxury safari company. He also dabbled in gentleman farming on the family's rambling acreage outside Nairobi, which was even profiled in the prestigious American edition of Geo magazine. Micato's private safaris ultimately prevailed over farming and forty-five years and a Stanford, Harvard and Stanford Business School graduation later, the Pintos are joined by their (well educated!) children in the running of Micato Safaris. As it has always been, Micato is more than just a business—it is a labour of love.

The Experience
The thrilling jolt of discovery, the shared smiles of amazement. Connecting with nature, with new cultures… and with a timeless part of yourself. Such experiences are not always common… but in Africa, they are as regular as the rising Serengeti sun.

But this is more than just Africa—it’s Micato’s Africa. It’s an experience unlike any other, where you are a VIP everywhere you go. It is a blend of excitement and elegance, a place of delightful surprises and uncommon luxury. It is the home of Felix and Jane Pinto, who treat their guests, as Travel+Leisure noted, like “well-loved, out-of-town relatives.”

Whether you're looking for a classic safari, a private off-the-beaten path journey, or a personal exploration of Africa's tribal cultures and rituals, there is simply no experience like a Micato safari.
